In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Jack and Jill of America, Inc. South Suburban Chicago Chapter (JJSSCC) hosted a half-day legislative education and community service event at 10 a.m. on Monday, January 15, 2024. The event took place at Parker Junior High School in Flossmoor. Congresswoman Robin Kelly was the keynote speaker exploring the connectivity between key legislation that impacts the community and Dr. King’s legacy. Following the opening session, Congresswoman Kelly was joined by special guests Senator Mike Simmons, Justice Cynthia Cobbs, beauty industry mogul, Aris Singleton, Dr. Kristen N. Kenan, MD, MPH and mental health expert/author, Antuan Wilbon to host interactive programming on four legislative issues that impact the community: The Crown Act, Voter Awareness and Education, Mental Health Awareness and Education and Affirmative Action.
The event was underscored with community impact initiatives to support direct service organizations in the South Suburbs. JJSSCC hosted a food drive in support of Bloom Township Food Pantry and all event participants were encouraged to donate non-perishable food items to the food drive. Event participants also packed 300 toiletry bags which were donated to the Boys & Girls Club of Ford Heights. Meridian Health and Thank God It’s Natural were key sponsors for donations included in the toiletry bags.
